HAPevolve Staff Member Attends Homeland Security Training

Mary Akyol, manager, client services, HAPevolve, recently completed a Healthcare Leadership for Mass Causality Incident training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), in Anniston, Alabama and operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. Participants training at the CDP includes health care and public health courses at the Noble Training Facility, the nation’s only hospital dedicated to training healthcare professionals in disaster preparedness and response.

The training course teaches participants critical decision-making skills to respond effectively in all-hazards disaster emergency preparedness activities, such as incident management, mass casualty response, and emergency response to a catastrophic natural disaster or terrorist act. Akyol learned the importance of identifying key external partners and their roles, the use of emergency operations plans as guidance for internal staff leaders, and structured response through the use of Incident Command System in the health care system.

Akyol works with HAPevolve in providing consultative emergency preparedness and response services in Pennsylvania and across the country. Since 2018, HAPevolve has developed a strong following from health care providers in 13 states for its capabilities and expertise around issues related to health care preparedness. This training will enable HAPevolve to continue to help health care providers build a resilient framework to prepare for and recover from all-hazards disaster emergencies.
